MARR-Manitoba Annual Community Recycling & Waste Reduction Forum in Winnipeg
Jacomien recently attended the MARR-Manitoba Annual Community Recycling & Waste Reduction Forum in Winnipeg. This esteemed annual event is tailored for municipalities, Indigenous communities, recycling and waste management service providers, Producer Responsibility Organizations(PROs), and professionals dedicated to advancing effective local and regional waste reduction initiatives (https://marrmb.com/events/).
It was a pleasure to connect with representatives from the Province of Manitoba, including Andrea Bergman, Ashley Garden, and Kim Timmer. A key highlight was the presentation on the Backhaul Project, spearheaded by the Green Action Centre.
This innovative initiative fosters collaboration among remote winter road First Nation communities, PROs, Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), and the First Nations WasteMinimization Team. Funded by ISC and nine PROs, the project partners with transporters delivering essential goods and supplies via winter roads. Rather than returning with empty trailers, waste management teams load these vehicles with collected waste materials, optimizing logistics and minimizing environmental impact. All program materials are meticulously collected, stored, packaged, and transported in full compliance with the Federal Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and Manitoba’s Dangerous Goods Handling and Transportation Act.
